In "Cabbage Patch Indicators", the students made red
cabbage juice, and used it to identify various liquids as acids or bases.
Kim waits her turn patiently as
Katherine pours a liquid.
|
Allie watches closely as Claire drops
some indicator solution into a sample. Liza eagerly records the results.
|
Kaylee uses a pair of tongs to dip the
pH paper into a test tube, as Kim waits to record the pH.
|
Austin drops some indictor solution into
a sample.
|
Gina observes eagerly as Aimee drops in
some indicator solution, and Jackie stirs it up.
|
Ben watches as Mike drops in some
indicator. Without safety glasses on, Ben shouldn't be so close. (He put
them back on right after this photo was taken!) |
Katherine steps aside so Kim can finally
get her turn at mixing the chemicals. Katie continues to wait. (She wasn't
so eager to mix them, anyway.) |
Olivia and Stephanie found that dipping
the pH paper into the test tubes was too difficult, so they modified their
plan. |

Tie-Dyeing Round Two! Our first
attempt was cut short due to some drainage problems, so we came back to
Chromatography one more time.
Donavon feels the power of the dye. Kim
and Katie go about their business. Kaylee didn't think I was really
going to take the picture - she didn't smile!
|
Val actually dyed her shoes!
|
Ashley and Val were both happy with the
"new" shoes!
|
The dye baths.
|
Luke was moderately pleased with his
results on this shirt.
|
Claire really wanted a picture of
herself with the apron and gloves on.
|
Cory really liked his results.
|
Mike thought his dye job was rather
slick.
|
Jason was displeased with his
"orange" shirt the last time, so he re-tied it and threw it in
the red. The result made him quite happy!
|
Liza really liked how this shirt turned
out - even though it was Cory's!
|
Chelsy created this pattern by placing
only sections of her shirt in each dye bath (so as not to contaminate any
of the baths). She really liked it!
|
Kim was excited to see her results!
|
Casie really liked her results!
|
Keith and Jamie relax near the end of
the lab.
|
Jamie and Clare had a good time!
|
Hmm...Steph and Chia told me what the
caption for this one had to be, but I can't remember!!
|
Stephanie and Olivia were proud of their
shirt.
|
Instead of dyeing it again, Stephanie
and Olivia wrote messages on the front...
|
....and the back.!
|
After all that hard work, it's nice to
see them pleased with the results!
|
Luke also liked the second shirt he had
done. |
Dani was another happy customer! Jackie
also enjoyed her experience! |
Dani wanted another a picture, this time
by herself. |

In their study of sound, the students
investigate different ways of making different types of sound. One method was
the "Bullroarer", a simple device that creates a "rurring"
sound when spun through the air. Their task was to investigate the device, then
modify it in some way so as to improve the sound created (as in, make it louder,
change the pitch, etc.). Here are pictures of the students doing their initial
investigations.
Section 8-4 investigates their devices.
|
Claire gets the hang of it.
|
Allie and Chelsy become experts.
|
Claire appears to have lost hers, while
Allie's having a grand old time!
|
Mike and Mark enjoy the investigation.
|
A great photo of two great young ladies.
|
Luke gets his flying good as Amy,
keeping her distance, experiences some trouble.
|
Section 8-1 conducts their
investigations.
|
Ben's bullroarer appears to be chasing
him!
|
Section 8-2 displays a wide range of
activities during their investigations.
|
Another shot of section 8-2.
|
Here's a pleasant photo of Casie and
Stephanie.
|
This is a sweet picture!
|
Ryan shows Donavon how to put his hips
into it!
|
With all the space outside, Brittany and
Ashley work right next to each other!
|
Kayla gets hers roaring good, while
Kaylee unravels herself from hers.
|
Kayla demonstrates how easy it is to
hurt yourself with this thing - by whacking herself in the leg! Kaylee
pays close attention, so as not to experience this herself.
|
Katherine's a natural!
|
Kim whirls hers like a pro! |
~~~~~ Bullroarer
Modifications ~~~~~
The next day, the students were to bring
their bullroarers back, with some sort of modification to make them louder, or
have a higher or lower pitch. I had intended to get pictures from each section,
to demonstrate the variety of ideas. Unfortunately, I forgot after the first
class. Sorry!!
